MALTA, N.Y. (WRGB)— A Malta man is facing charges after allegedly kicking and injuring a dog at his residence on Knabner Road. The Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office responded to an animal complaint on August 28, leading to the arrest of Eugene R. Willis.

Investigators reported that Willis kicked a Labrador Retriever, resulting in bruising and difficulty for the animal to relieve itself. Both the injured dog and another brown Labrador Retriever at the home were taken by the Malta Animal Control Officer and transported to the Saratoga County Animal Shelter. The dogs received medical treatment and were safely housed.

Willis has been charged with overdriving, torturing, and injuring animals. This incident is the latest in a series of animal abuse cases in the Capital Region. Last month, the owners of Anastasia’s Acres Dog Boarding in Washington County faced animal cruelty charges after 21 dogs were found dead at their facility. Authorities stated that the animals were not provided with water or proper ventilation.

In response to such cases, Saratoga County is advancing a proposed local law to establish an online registry of convicted animal abuse and neglect offenders. Senator Jim Tedisco is advocating for changes to Buster’s Law, proposing that aggravated cruelty to animals be punishable by up to two years in state prison and a $5,000 fine.

Willis was released on an appearance ticket and is expected to appear in Malta Town Court soon.
