Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis met with Belgacem Haftar, Director General of the Fund for the Development and Reconstruction of Libya and son of the de facto leader of eastern Libya, Khalifa Haftar, according to government sources.
The meeting, which was also attended by Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis, focused on bilateral relations as well as cooperation in the fields of economy and trade.
According to a statement by the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the visit was an “opportunity to explore ways of enhancing cooperation in the sectors of construction, energy, investments, and transport” and prepare for the upcoming Greek business mission to Benghazi, expected later this fall.
Moreover, Gerapetritis expressed his satisfaction with the sharp reduction in flows from Tobruk to Crete, following his recent visit to Benghazi.
It was further agreed that the training of Libyan coast guard officers in Greece would continue, with a focus on naval deterrence and the control of migration flows.
The foreign minister also reiterated Greece’s and the European Union’s stance that the Turkey–Libya memorandum is “invalid and void.”
