A potential agreement with an American airline “would be crucial” to strengthen relations between Malta and the United States, Ian Borg told senior government officials in Washington.
The deputy prime minister led a Maltese delegation in a series of meetings with senior US officials to explore opportunities for strengthening bilateral cooperation in trade, connectivity, maritime security, and energy security.
The delegation met with Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent, Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum, and Secretary of Energy Chris Wright.
During talks about air connectivity, Borg told the officials that a potential agreement with an American airline would open up “prospects for increased trade across various sectors”.
The trade agreement between the EU and the US led the meetings agenda as both Malta and the US noted the agreement “opens new opportunities” for both sides “particularly in strengthening energy security”.
Talks also focused on Malta’s role in the global maritime industry as the Secretaries thanked Malta for its “effective cooperation” in the sector especially through the new Global Centre for Maritime Sanctions Monitoring which launched its operations from its base in Malta this year.
