Five local middle school students spent part of their summer exploring college life and hands-on science at the Tech Trek Science Camp at UC Santa Barbara.
Students Brianna Privett, Gabriella Quinionez, and Avery Torres from Lompoc Valley Middle School, along with Jessie Teegarden and Natalya Ramirez from Vandenberg Middle School, were nominated by teachers and selected by the Lompoc-Vandenberg Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) to attend the weeklong camp for girls entering eighth grade.
Funded through support from SpaceX and community contributions, the program introduces participants to STEM through experiments, classes taught credentialed teachers, and presentations by women working in math, science, technology.
The Lompoc-Vandenberg AAUW branch has sponsored students since the camp’s inception in 1988. This year, 10 Tech Treck camps were held across California, including two at UCSB.
