Council of Albanian Ambassadors: Suspension of US-Kosovo dialogue is a worrying step, risks destabilizing the region

The Council of Albanian Ambassadors (KASH) has reacted with concern to the United States’ decision to suspend the Strategic Dialogue with Kosovo for an indefinite period, describing this action as dangerous for bilateral relations and for stability in the Western Balkans.
In a statement to the media, the KASH calls on the acting Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti – as the winner of the February 9 elections – and other political forces to overcome divisions and cooperate to protect national interests, as well as to restore relations with the US in the key areas of defense, security and the economy.
“Kosovo is among the most pro-American countries in the world, with a clear commitment to peace, democracy and Euro-Atlantic values. Suspending the dialogue with Pristina, while advancing the dialogue with Belgrade, sends the wrong message and risks destabilizing the region, giving space to Serbia’s intervention through the Serbian List,” the statement said.
The Council considers it unfair that a country that has been among the most stable partners of the US is penalized in this way, while according to it, Serbia – which is increasingly moving closer to China, Russia and Iran – benefits from more lenient treatment.
“Kosovo needs support in building its institutions, not pressures that could paralyze their functioning,” MTEF further emphasizes.
The reaction emphasizes that the authorities in Kosovo should make efforts to emerge as soon as possible from the punitive measures imposed by the European Union and now by the US, through a more constructive approach and by appreciating the essential role of Western support for the country’s development and security.
“Belgrade’s interventions in Kosovo, through Serbian political parties, must be addressed in close coordination with the US and the EU, and always within the constitutional framework of the Republic of Kosovo,” adds KASH.
At the end of the statement, the Council of Albanian Ambassadors calls on the entire political spectrum in Kosovo to unify positions on the dialogue with Serbia, in order to reach a final agreement that would ensure mutual recognition between the two states.
