Last week, France unveiled the five finalists for their Best International Feature submission at the Oscars (reported here). The country was choosing between Arco, It Was Just an Accident, The Little Sister, Nouvelle Vague, and A Private Life. It always seemed like they’d be sending either It Was Just an Accident from Jafar Panahi or Nouvelle Vague from Richard Linklater to the Academy. Well, today they’ve made their selection.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, France is submitting It Was Just an Accident for Best International Feature consideration at the Academy Awards. Ultimately, the critical acclaim for, as well as the political nature of, Panahi’s film won the day over Netflix and Linklater. Either would have been a safe bet to be nominated, though this selection may well be the current frontrunner. Stay tuned.
