Fr Vincent Micallef OP, was recently re-elected as provincial prior of Malta’s Dominican province of St Pius V at the provincial chapter held at the order’s convent in Valletta.
During the chapter, Fr Claudio Borg OP, Fr Michael Camilleri OP, Fr Reno Muscat OP, and Fr Alan Joseph Adami OP, were also elected as definitors. Fr Paul Gatt OP and Fr Aaron Zahra OP were elected as councillors to the provincial council. The chapter is held every four years.
Fr Micallef joined the Dominican Order on September 8, 1967, and was ordained a priest on July 20, 1974. He went to Brazil in 1978 where he spent 30 years as a missionary. Besides extensive pastoral work he served as a chaplain in various parishes, as well as master of pre-novices, novices, and students in formation.
He was chaplain of the parishes of Faxinal and Curitiba in the state of Paraná, and in São Paulo in the state of São Paulo.
In 1983, he founded the School for Children and Youth with Physical and Mental Disabilities (APAE) in Faxinal, and in 1995 he received the title of Honorary Citizen of Curitiba for his pastoral work among the poor in the favelas.
Between 2006 and 2009 he was provincial of the Dominican province of Bartolomeu de Las Casas in Brazil, and for some time he also lectured at the Dominican faculty in São Paulo and served as vicar of the provincial for Maltese missionaries in Brazil.
He returned to Malta in 2010 and served as vice-chaplain at Our Lady of Fatima parish, Gwardamanġa. In 2013, he was appointed vicar of the provincial prior and chaplain of the same parish, and served as chaplain for eight years until June 15, 2021, when he was first elected provincial prior of the Maltese Dominican province.
Fr Micallef was born in Valletta on March 2, 1950, to Victor and Mary Micallef, and is the fourth of six children.
