After an early error against London City on opening matchday in the Women’s Super League, Katie Reid has gone from strength to strength for Arsenal. She played a big part next to Steph Catley in a 0-0 draw at Man United and spoke about the value of a “supportive” environment.
- ‘We’re pleased with a clean sheet’
Reid has got her chance after an injury to Leah Williamson, who damaged the same knee that she ruptured in 2023 after her efforts for England in the Euros this summer. The academy graduate is only 18 years old, and she thanked her teammates for making the transition to the first team easier.
“The girls make it an easy transition. I play with one of the best players like Steph so they just make it easy. They’re so supportive, and the coaches have been really good with me and giving information.”
Melvine Malard was a difficult customer to take care of on the day. The striker sprinted onto a clipped ball from Maya Le Tissierto split the central defenders and shoot inside the first forty seconds of the match. However, the teenager took on the task as best she could and stood out.
On a day when the Gunners were not at their brilliant best on the ball, such security was needed.
“It was a tough match out of possession. I felt in possession, we weren’t clicking. So we just want to be cleaner in possession and we’re pleased with a clean sheet because we can always build on that.”
Honoured to sign a pro contract with her childhood club in October 2024, Reid knows what these matches mean to the fans who travel home and away. The side have played at West Ham and Man United in the last two weeks and will embrace being in front of their supporters against Aston Villa.
“The traveling fans are unreal. We hear them throughout the game, and the support they give us just adds another level. So we really appreciate them, and we work hard on the pitch as well.”
