Afghan internet services 'fully restored' after access cut by interim government Media outlets in Afghanistan have reported that internet and telephone services that had been shut down across the country since Monday have been restored.

The Taliban interim government had been taking steps to ban internet access by cutting off fiber-optic links to some provinces since mid-September to prevent what it called immoral behavior.

The Taliban appear to have expanded the ban throughout the country on Monday, causing flights at Kabul airport to be canceled and crippling the country’s banking system.

The Taliban have yet to comment on the resumption. But in the past, they have expressed concern about pornography on the internet and other online content.

The UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan had been calling for a swift resumption of the services, citing threats to economic security.

It also noted that telecommunications systems are vital during times of disaster. Powerful earthquakes that hit eastern Afghanistan in August left more than 2,200 people dead.

Human rights organizations also voiced criticism of the blackout.
