Folks, you best start believin’ Disney wants the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise back on the water…because they’re in the process of doing just that. While it’s been a bit radio silent for a while, Keira Knightley’s own Pirates update may have been a sign of things to come. Though we may never see Elizabeth Swann again, the series still lives in active development – per new comments from producer Jerry Bruckheimer.

Pirates 6 Is Still Being Written

Catching up with TheWrap at its annual conference TheGrill, the legendary Hollywood talent was asked about some of his still brewing legacy-quels in the House of Mouse. In terms of what’s going on with the saga that once saw Johnny Depp as its public face, Bruckheimer had this to say:

“We’re working on a script. If we don’t have it on the page, it’s not gonna get on the screen. … [Ted Elliott] worked on it, and we’ve brought someone else in to fill in the blanks.”

Having a script in the works is always a good sign that your studio is still willing to put money into your idea. However, before you go thinking that Captain Jack Sparrow is about to set sail yet again, not so fast.

Margot Robbie’s Variant Is Still In The Game

A Johnny Depp-less reboot of Pirates of the Caribbean has been discussed since THR’s 2018 chat with Sean Bailey, then president of Walt Disney Pictures, put the project on the map. However, fans still had their hopes up for a direct sequel to 2017’s Dead Men Tell No Tales, with Captain Jack at the helm – which saw a bit of a bake off take place.

The competing story was one that followed a female pirate captain, which saw both Karen Gillan and Margot Robbie teased as highly likely candidates. Which leads to Jerry Bruckheimer seeming to have announced the result of that competition, thusly:

“We had two scripts at one point, and then one kind of dropped out and we kind of went with the other one. [Margot]’s still involved.”

There you have it, Mouseketeers! We might see Margot Robbie having an adventure on the high seas after all, bringing the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise along with her. Though it’s an uncertain prospect, you can still enjoy all five previous installments at your leisure, through a Disney+ subscription.
