Portugal’s Infrastructure Ministry (IP) has completed a comprehensive upgrade of the Beira Alta Line, a key rail route connecting Pampilhosa to the Spanish border. Stretching over 190km, this important line now boasts modernised infrastructure, including electrification, advanced signalling, and several track enhancements. The final section of the upgrade, between Pampilhosa and Mangualde, was completed on September 28, 2025, with Portuguese Trains (CP) resuming passenger services on this newly improved segment.
Key Improvements on the Beira Alta Line
The Beira Alta Line upgrade involved a wide range of improvements aimed at modernising the route and increasing its capacity. Work was carried out on embankment reinforcements, improved drainage, and track renewals, along with new alignments designed to enable higher train speeds. Additionally, the installation of passing loops at ten locations for 750m-long freight trains enhances the line’s ability to handle increased freight traffic.
A key feature of the upgrade was the removal of all level crossings along the line, improving safety and reducing delays. Stations along the route have been refurbished to ensure they meet modern standards for passenger comfort and accessibility.
Electrification and Advanced Signalling
The Beira Alta Line is now fully electrified with a 25kV 50Hz alternating current (AC) system, a significant step forward in Portugal’s new efforts to modernise its rail infrastructure and promote environmentally friendly transport. The line has also been equipped with ETCS Level 2 signalling based on GSM-R radio communications, improving train management and ensuring that the route is capable of handling future traffic demands efficiently.
Improving Freight Connectivity with Spain
The Beira Alta Line upgrade also includes a major enhancement to freight rail operations. A new 3.2km spur has been constructed at Mealhada, providing a direct north-to-east connection between the Lisbon – Porto main line and the Beira Alta Line. This new link enables freight trains to travel between the ports of Aveiro and Leixões and the Beira Alta Line without the need to reverse at Pampilhosa, improving operational efficiency. The new connection also includes the construction of a 1.2km viaduct and an 820m passing loop, further enhancing capacity.
Strategic Importance of the Beira Alta Line
The Beira Alta Line is a critical rail corridor that connects Portugal’s interior with major urban centres, and it plays a vital role in the country’s rail integration with Spain and the broader European network. According to IP, the modernisation of this line will improve both passenger and freight transport, making the line more competitive, sustainable, and capable of meeting future transportation needs.
In addition to boosting rail services within Portugal, the Beira Alta Line is an essential link in the wider European rail system, facilitating the flow of goods between Portugal and Spain. With the completion of this upgrade, the country’s rail infrastructure has been significantly modernised, ensuring it can meet the growing demands of both domestic and international transport.
Enhancing Sustainability and Safety
The modernisation of the Beira Alta Line aligns with Portugal’s broader goals of improving the sustainability, safety, and efficiency of its rail network. The electrification of the line not only supports the country’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions but also improves the speed and reliability of services. Furthermore, the improvements to safety and infrastructure will help ensure that the Beira Alta Line remains a crucial part of Portugal’s transport network for years to come.
