The Second Italian Civil War (2026)

After years of economic crisis, distrust in institutions and strong social and extremist pressures, Italy enters a spiral of political fragmentation. The end of 2025 marks the beginning of the second Italian civil war, a conflict that sees the collapse of the central authority and the birth of secessionist governments and revolutionary movements.

The first area to declare independence is the Cisalpine Federation. Born from the alliance between Lombard and Venetian secessionist movements, supported by industrial sectors and part of the economic elites of the North. It is a semi-auto-acting government, oriented towards economic liberalism and total autonomy from Rome. Its goal is to build an independent and federal state in northern Italy, modeled on Switzerland. Subsequently, loyal movements to the old Italian Republic explode in Venice, subsequently taking control. The main external support they receive is from many nations belonging to the Brics, more than all of Russia.

In Emilia-Romagna, a socialist revolution explodes led by a union of unions, student movements and far-left groups. They call themselves "The rose"and establish a popular democracy system inspired by the models of the twentieth century, but more decentralized. Their goal is to export the revolution to the rest of Italy and create a “new Yugoslavia” in an Italian key. The main external support they receive comes from China.

Sardinia, seat of strategic military bases, is occupied by NATO to prevent Italian conflict from destabilizing the Mediterranean. Sardinia thus becomes a de facto military protectorate, with limited access also to Italians. In addition to coordinating the main operations to quell the war in Italy, it aims to maintain stability in the Mediterranean and contain any Russian or Chinese influences.

Tuscany refuses both the central government and the secessionists, trying to resist any form of centralization, maintaining a municipal self -government utopia. Each province declares itself autonomous, forming the front of the autonomous provinces. There is no unitary government, but a constellation of small local republics, some more democratic, others under the control of armed militias.

The central government, based in Rome, remained in control of most of the center and southern Italy. It is supported by sectors of the army remained faithful and external aid from the European Union, the United States and the faithful or close to NATO governments. Despite this, with the war it has also become very fragile, with large controlled areas of fact from independent militias and criminal organizations.
