RENO, Nev. (KOLO) – NV Energy could be hit with a fine of $1 million after being accused of trying to charge customers for their own alleged negligence.

The State of Nevada says that in 2022, a contractor mismarked two areas in Las Vegas prior to a digging project, resulting in hundreds of thousands of dollars in property damage and hours-long outages for customers.

NV Energy settled and promised not to pass the charge to customers.

Documents filed ahead of this week’s PUCN meeting shows it included the costs of one repair in its rate case.

NV Energy says it was inadvertently added and later removed. Had it not been caught, customers bills would have gone up.

This marks the second time this year that PUC staff has caught the company trying to pass inappropriate charges to rate payers.

The PUC is also continuing its overcharge investigations against NV Energy.
