A welcome taste of traditionSlovenia is a meeting point between the alpine and the Mediterranean worlds – a position reflected in its wonderful cuisine, which is also laced with the flavours of the Karst and the Pannonian plains. Traditional Slovenian dishes to try include ričet, a thick soup made with barley, smoked ham, potatoes and other vegetables – and for dessert don’t miss Prekmurska gibanica, with its layers of poppy seeds, cottage cheese, walnuts and apple. Finally, you simply can’t leave Slovenia without trying štruklji – boiled or baked dumplings with sweet or savoury filings.
