Global sports streamer DAZN is going after individuals identified in Italy as knowingly accessing pirated soccer games.
The London-based streamer sent cease-and-desist letters to 2,200 people Italian authorities identified as using illegal subscriptions to access professional soccer matches. The letter also asked letter recipients to pay a €500 ($578 fee) to avoid further legal action.
The individual users were identified by Italy’s Guardia di Finanza tracking illegal IPTV sites that streamed Serie A, Serie B, and European Cup soccer matches.
“Illegally watching content puts those who do it at risk and strikes at the very foundations of sport. It’s not smart. It’s not free. It’s not without consequences,” Stefano Azzi, CEO of DAZN Italy, said in a statement.
Italian authorities say going after individual users has revealed additional third-party piracy resulting in more than 2,500 fines.
“The era of impunity is finally coming to an end: the net around digital pirates is tightening month by month,” added Luigi De Siervo, CEO of Lega Calcio Serie A.
