A group of young athletes from the Malta Weightlifting Association took part in the Ferenz Szabo Trophy.
The competition was open for athletes under 20 years of age and was held in A Coruña, Spain. The event featured 13 teams from six countries, including Italy, Germany, Slovenia, and Great Britain.

The Maltese team delivered an outstanding performance, securing fourth place overall in the team rankings – a strong result against tough international competition.

Aaliyah Gatt was among the standout performers, lifting 71 kg in the Snatch and 94 kg in the Clean & Jerk, earning a total of 212 points.

Gatt’s impressive showing included a new national U-17 record, placing her third in her group and eighth overall.

Luke Treeby Ward also excelled with a combined lift of 226 kg, achieving a new personal best in the Snatch and scoring 269 points.

Newcomers Nathaniel Fenech and Luke Stefan Micallef made promising international debuts.

Fenech lifted a total of 192 kg for 271 points, while Micallef achieved 213kg and 281 points. Both athletes demonstrated strong potential and composure on the international stage.

This competition served as an excellent preparation ahead of Challenge 210 in Switzerland and the Malta National Championships, scheduled for November 15 at the Marsa Sports Complex.

Sport Malta and the Maltese Olympic Committee assisted the Malta Weightlifting Association.
