MARSHALL, Mich. (WILX) – Firefighters from across the state of Michigan will be in Marshall this week, learning how to handle emergencies involving critical infrastructure.

Consumers Energy and Emergency Response Solutions (ERS) International are hosting a specialized training session for first responders at Consumers Energy’s Marshall Training Center Monday through Friday.

Firefighters will get hands-on experience with critical infrastructure, safety protocols and emergency response procedures. That includes two days dedicated to utility emergency response practices at the training center.

The center offers a controlled environment where firefighters can learn how to safely navigate utility equipment, recognize electrical hazards and learn fall protection techniques.

Norm Kapala, vice president of grid operation restoration, and work management at Consumers Energy said it’s important for Consumers crews and first responders to work together during storms, fires and other emergencies.

“By training together, we strengthen our shared understanding and improve our ability to respond quickly and safely,” Kapala said.

Consumers hosted a similar event earlier this year — the first ever Michigan State Police Fire Investigation training at Flint Gas City. More than 30 firefighters from across the state engaged in interactive activities to identify gas theft, leak sources and explosion risks.
