California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) vetoed a bill that would’ve created a $50 million grant program for carbon removal projects, saying in a letter that it would be “duplicative” and that there’s no funding for it in the state budget.

Newsom, while noting carbon removal “is an increasingly necessary strategy” for California to hit its 2045 goal of becoming carbon neutral, cited three other bills he signed into law in recent years that support the carbon removal industry and noted the state’s difficult financial situation.
