Richard was born in Norway, son of Betty A. (Caddy) Ray and Robert E. Ray, Sr. He served with the US Army, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment during the Vietnam War era. For his service, he received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, and two Marksman Badges. Wounded in combat, he was awarded the Purple Heart and honorably discharged in 1973.(WLUC)
