A judge told a young Bulgarian man that Britain’s surfing capital may be the place to be in the summer – but not for drug dealers.

He also raised concerns that someone was recruiting people in Bulgaria to come to Newquay to drug deal – with the defendant the third the judge had sentenced in recent months.

Lifeguard Yordan Ianakiev admitted possessing cocaine with intent to supply when he was stopped by police in Newquay, Cornwall, last month.

Truro Crown Court heard he had 18 wraps of cocaine hidden in his underwear and also had a phone and cash on him. More cash was found in his hotel room.

The court heard he was a 20-year-old lifeguard on the Black Sea – but this was the first time he had seen surf.

He said the defendant had no previous convictions and had admitted his role.

Judge Adkin said:”Newquay is the place to be in the summer – it may well be – but not for cocaine dealers.”
