The country is well-positioned to tap into the international wellness tourism market, which is increasingly popular among travelers seeking destinations for stress relief, rejuvenation, and medical treatments.

“It’s easier to attach health tourism to the established image of Croatia as a tourist country,” Kolar noted. With its year-round tourism potential, health tourism could become one of the key sectors helping to extend the country’s peak season well beyond the summer months. This would allow Croatia to tap into the growing demand for wellness and medical tourism, not just during the traditional tourist season but throughout the entire year.

Currently, health tourism accounts for approximately 5% of Croatia’s total tourism revenue, generating between €700 million and €900 million annually. By diversifying into health tourism, the country can reduce its reliance on traditional summer tourism, making it a more sustainable tourism destination.

She pointed out that while individual clinics and resorts have been successful in their own right, a unified branding strategy is essential for maximizing Croatia’s visibility as a health tourism destination on the global stage.
“Turkey has done this exceptionally well by establishing a government agency dedicated to health tourism,” Kolar explained. “If Croatia can adopt a similar approach and launch a coordinated national campaign, it could propel health tourism to the next level.”

According to Kolar, developing a modern health tourism brand for Croatia will require consistent effort over the next five to ten years. Fortunately, there is already a collaborative framework in place, with ministries, the Croatian Chamber of Commerce, and the Croatian National Tourist Board all involved in the process. The groundwork has been laid, and now it’s time to take the next step in promoting Croatia’s health tourism sector globally.
