(Alliance News) – Nextchem, a MAIRE group company, through its subsidiary MyRechemical, has been awarded a feasibility study by Mana Group and Equinor for a plant to produce methanol from municipal and industrial waste at the Mongstad refinery in Norway, as reported on Tuesday by MF-Milano Finanza.

The project will use NX Circular technology to transform waste into synthetic chemical gas, which will then be converted into low-carbon methanol, in compliance with the EU Renewable Energy Directive.

The methanol produced will initially replace marine fuel in compliance with the FuelEu Maritime regulation, avoiding the purchase of ETS credits and penalties, and could also be used in methanol-to-jet plants for the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in compliance with the FuelEu Aviation regulation.

Nextchem will provide Mana Group and Equinor with technical and economic assessments on waste gasification and synthesis gas purification. Fabio Fritelli, managing director of Nextchem, said this is the first major Nordic waste-to-methanol project, emphasizing that Northern Europe is an ideal environment for replicable and scalable initiatives.
