The Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs Péter Szijjártó said in the evening of October 21 in his profile on X that he expects a wave of disinformation and statements that the peace summit in Budapest will not take place. He noted that the final decision regarding the meeting between Trump and Putin has not yet been made.

“Since the announcement of the peace summit in Budapest, it has been obvious that many will do everything possible to prevent its holding. The pro-war political elite and their media always behave this way before events that may prove decisive for war or peace”

A few hours earlier NBC News, citing a source in the Trump administration, reported that the organization of a meeting with Putin in Budapest had been suspended. Trump stated that both sides were not sufficiently prepared for talks.

The materials also mention that U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov held a constructive conversation, and Orbán expressed support for the summit as a “peace summit” and reported Hungary’s readiness to host it. Szijjártó also noted that the country will receive Putin despite the ICC arrest warrant for the abduction of Ukrainian children.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that if invited to Budapest for talks between Trump and Putin, he would be willing to join.

Context and reaction to the events surrounding the summit

Official results and the next steps for the parties remain open, but the information space largely revolves around preparations for possible negotiations and diplomatic maneuvering between the United States, Russia, and the Hungarian side. At the same time, the parties emphasize the importance of dialogue and seeking paths to a future peace.
