To understand the identity of KF Shkendija, Shelbourne’s Conference League hosts this week, the starting place should be Skanderbeg Square in Skopje.
It is named after Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg, the national hero of Albania whose legend is built around his successful resistance of the Ottomans in the 15th century. He is honoured in a statue depicting a warrior on a horse.
