After a stable week in the Alabama Sportswriters Association football media rankings for local teams, Week 9 brought a shakeup for the Thompson Warriors, Spain Park Jaguars and Vincent Yellow Jackets ahead of the final week of region play.
Thompson moved down two spots to No. 4 in Class 7A while Spain Park and Vincent each bumped up one spot to No. 8 in Class 6A and No. 9 in Class 2A, respectively, when the rankings were released on Wednesday, Oct. 22.
Starting with the positives, Spain Park bumped up one spot to No. 8 thanks to its 46 points in the poll, which was 26 less than No. 7 Pike Road but three more than Parker, which slid from No. 3 down to No. 9 after a loss to Homewood for the region championship.
The Jags improved to 6-2 overall and won their fourth-straight game thanks to a 42-13 win over the Calera Eagles on the road. Spain Park has now outscored its last four opponents 156-34 since its 1-point loss to No. 5 Benjamin Russell, and both of the Jags’ losses are to teams in the top five of their respective classification.
Spain Park will close out region play at home on Oct. 24 when it hosts the Chilton County Tigers, who are winless in Class 6A, Region 3. The Jags are locked into the No. 2 seed in the region and will host either McAdory or Bessemer City in the first round of the playoffs on Nov. 7.
Vincent also moved up one place to No. 9 in Class 2A with 28 points, 31 less than No. 8 Ariton but two more than North Sand Mountain, which fell multiple places after its fall from the ranks of the unbeatens.
The Jackets rallied to defeat the Isabella Mustangs 33-28 on the road in Week 8. Vincent remains the No. 2 seed in Class 2A, Region 5 and will host its first-round playoff game against Falkville on Nov. 7.
Before then though, Vincent must finish out region play with a visit from the Greene County Tigers, which defeated the Jackets in their region finale last year, on Oct. 24.
As for Thompson, it is down to No. 4 in the Class 7A rankings with 117 points, four fewer than Auburn High School at No. 3 and 17 more than No. 5 Hoover, which just beat the Warriors last week 33-30 on a 55-yard field goal at the buzzer from James Bryant.
The loss is Thompson’s third of the season and second in four games, dropping the Warriors to 6-3 on the year. Both of their in-state losses are to top-five teams as Clay-Chalkville remains No. 1 in Class 6A and the lone nationally ranked team in Alabama, and Grayson remained at No. 3 in the MaxPreps national rankings this week.
Thompson will look to improve on its lowest ranking of the season against the Prattville Lions on Oct. 24 on the road at Stanley Jensen Stadium.
A win would give the Warriors the region title, but a loss would subject them to potential tiebreaker scenarios that could force them into the bottom half of Class 7A, Region 3, but Prattville needs a win to get into the playoffs as the No. 2 seed.
In other rankings news, Williamson is the new No. 1 team in Class 5A after a double-overtime win over Vigor.
