Mayors protest plan to centralize traffic fine revenue in Greece

[Intime News]

Greek municipalities are warning against a proposed law that would transfer the collection of traffic fines from local authorities to the national budget.

The measure, part of the Ministry of Digital Governance’s draft bill on “Digital Enhancement of Road Safety,” would redirect funds currently used by municipalities to finance road safety projects to a national fund, partly to support police and military pensions.

The Central Union of Municipalities of Greece (KEDE) said the change would deprive local governments of crucial revenue long used to prevent traffic accidents and improve road safety.
