SKY express is expanding its network between Greece and Germany with the launch of three new direct routes from Athens and Thessaloniki. The new flights, aimed at enhancing both leisure and business travel, are expected to strengthen Greece’s tourism outreach in Germany, one of its most important European markets.
The new routes, which will begin operation in the autumn of 2025, include:
- Athens–Berlin–Athens, starting October 16, operating four times per week.
- Athens–Hamburg–Athens, starting October 24, operating three times per week.
- Thessaloniki–Düsseldorf–Thessaloniki, starting November 5, operating three times per week.
These additional services are set to provide more options for travelers between the two countries, improving air connectivity and reinforcing Greece’s growing presence in the German market.
Strengthening Ties Between Greece and Germany
The announcement of these new routes was made at a special event in Hamburg, co-organized by the Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO) office in Germany and SKY express. The event marked a milestone in enhancing travel between Greece and Germany, which is a significant source of tourists for Greece each year.
Greece has long been a popular destination for German tourists, with many travelers attracted by the country’s rich culture, historical sites, stunning landscapes, and renowned Mediterranean cuisine. The new direct routes will make it even easier for German citizens to travel to Greece for leisure, business, or cultural trips, supporting the continued growth of tourism in Greece.
According to Nikoleta Lekanidi, Head of the GNTO Germany Office, the new routes will strengthen year-round travel opportunities between the two countries, reflecting Greece’s ongoing efforts to expand its tourism offerings beyond the traditional “sun and sea” image. Greece has a diverse tourism appeal, including its natural beauty, gastronomy, and cultural heritage.
Focus on Sustainability and Quality Service
SKY express, known for its sustainable operations and high-quality service, is committed to improving air connectivity between Greece and key European markets. The airline’s expanded network is part of its broader strategy to enhance passenger experience while ensuring environmentally responsible travel.
During the event in Hamburg, Alexandros Michalopoulos, SKY express Key Accounts Project Manager, highlighted the airline’s dedication to connecting Greece with European destinations through reliable and sustainable flights. The airline’s continued expansion reflects a growing demand for direct connections between Greece and international markets, particularly in light of the ongoing recovery of global travel.
Promoting Greek Destinations Through New Routes
The event in Hamburg also included a Greek-themed dinner, where attendees enjoyed traditional Greek cuisine, wines, and spirits. This gathering provided an opportunity for travel agents, tour operators, and media representatives from Germany to learn about the new routes and the wide array of travel experiences available in Greece.
As part of its efforts to promote Greece as a year-round destination, the event focused on the diverse regions of Greece, encouraging German tour operators to offer packages that include visits to less-explored destinations beyond the well-known islands. Greece’s natural diversity, cultural offerings, and cuisine are key selling points in attracting tourists looking for more than just a beach holiday.
The event also featured discussions on familiarization trips (FAM trips) that aim to showcase various regions of Greece, from its historic cities and archaeological sites to its stunning rural landscapes and vibrant urban centers. These initiatives are expected to strengthen the collaboration between Greek tourism authorities and German travel operators.
Boosting Greece’s Tourism Industry
The launch of these new direct routes aligns with the Greek government’s broader strategy to enhance air connectivity and promote the country as a top international travel destination. SKY express’s expanded services will help support Greece’s tourism industry, which has shown remarkable resilience in recent years. According to data from the Greek Ministry of Tourism, Greece welcomed over 26 million foreign visitors in 2025, with Germany being one of the top source markets.
Improving air access to key German cities will help Greece maintain its position as a leading tourism destination in Europe. The new routes also offer opportunities for business travel, helping to foster stronger economic ties between the two countries.
Looking Ahead: More Connections to Come
The addition of these three new routes underscores the commitment of SKY express in improving Greece’s connectivity to major European markets. The airline intends to further broaden the scope of its network in the coming years, thus expanding the range of travel available from Greece to key cities across Europe.
In addition to these leisure services, the new routes are bound to strengthen commercial relations between Greece and Germany, as an increasing number of direct flights will facilitate the movement of business passengers between the two countries. With the increasing focus on both tourism and business travel, the enhanced network of SKY express will undoubtedly provide added value to travelers, businesses, and the economy of Greece as a whole.
