After months of uncertainty about the future of night trains, Swiss railway SBB has revealed the details of its upcoming service to Malmö via Copenhagen, departing from Basel.
SBB announced the launch of the new route, even though it said previously that night trains are not profitable as they entail significant costs for rolling stock, track access charges and staff.
Financial support at federal level from the Swiss government is therefore still necessary to ensure the launch of the EuroNight service in 2026 as well as future operations.
Currently, Switzerland plans to contribute approximately 47 million francs (around 50.6 million Euros) by 2030 for this purpose, but the parliament still needs to approve the budget, SBB said.
What’s the current situation for the Basel to Malmö train?
In partnership with RDC Deutschland, SBB will offer, from April 15th, 2026, a night train “from Basel SBB to Copenhagen and Malmö, all year round, three times a week and in both directions,” the company said in a press release on October 30th.
Here are the details of the 1400-km route:
“Departure from Basel SBB will take place every Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday at 5:35 pm, arriving in Malmö at 9:35 am the following day,” the SBB said.
“From Malmö, the train will depart on Thursdays, Saturdays, and Mondays at 6:57 pm, arriving at Basel SBB at 11:30 a.m. the following day. The EuroNight has approximately 350 seats in sleeping cars, couchette cars, and seated cars.”

- Freiburg (Breisgau)
- Karlsruhe
- Mannheim
- Frankfurt (Main) South
- Hamburg
In Denmark
- Padborg
- Kolding
- Odense
- Høje-Taastrup
- Copenhagen Airport
In Sweden
- Malmö, after which travellers can change to other Swedish destinations including Stockholm and Gothenburg
No stop is planned at Copenhagen Central Station due to time constraints, SBB said.
It adds, however, that the Danish capital is accessible from Høje-Taastrup and Copenhagen Airport stations in about fifteen minutes by S-train (suburban rail).
Tickets for the Malmö-bound EuroNight train will go on sale from November 4th, 2025, on the SBB Mobile app, on SBB.ch and in SBB travel centres.
