Honduras currently ranks 142nd in the RSF 2025 World Press Freedom Index, making it one of the most dangerous countries in the Americas for journalists. Media professionals are plagued by a permanent climate of fear and self-censorship. This situation is all the more worrying in the context of the upcoming elections, as political tensions are leading to an increase in threats and concrete risks to journalists’ physical integrity.

During this latest mission, RSF found that the situation is even more serious in this pre-election period than it had observed during a previous mission in March 2025. Journalists described struggling in an environment where intimidation, surveillance by the security forces – particularly on social media – and restrictions on access to cover political events are commonplace. Added to this is a wave of stigmatising rhetoric and online attacks against the press, fuelling political polarisation. Many journalists have complained about a lack of efficiency, and even negligence, in the handling of their complaints by the state institutions responsible for protecting journalists.
