NORTH OLMSTED, Ohio (WOIO) – The latest AI technology, according to Dr. Lauren Rollo-Juchno, AuD, gives her patients the clearest hearing yet.
“AI, or Artificial Intelligence, has been around for quite a while,” explains the Beltone audiologist who’s practiced for ten years. “But it’s never been used this sophisticatedly in hearing devices.”
Old hearing aid technology just amplified sound, while AI hearing aids are able to identify the sound a patient wants to hear and reduces the background noise to isolate that sound.
“We need to get rid of or reduce the unwanted sounds that can overcome the conversations that you’re trying to have,” said Rollo-Juchno. “A.I. has learned what sounds to reduce based off what it was taught from those thirteen million sound samples of real life situations.”
Thirteen million sound samples are only part of the solution.
The new technology replicates the way our brain works by using four microphones to figure out who’s talking, particularly when the patient is not facing the person, like when the speaker is in the backseat of a car
“Those four microphones all work together to try to find the conversation we’re trying to have and amplify it according to our prescription,” said Dr. Rollo.
According to Rollo, AI technology relatively new to hearing aid and she said she’s been working with the smallest rechargeable over-the-ear hearing aid since earlier this year.
“As a clinician, I have fit dozens of patients with this technology and I have had the happiest patients with the best results,” said Rollo.
The cost of these AI hearing aids range from $3,000 to $8,000 but they can be covered by insurance.
Dr. Rollo-Juncho suggests scheduling an appointment to discuss a patient’s needs and price.
“Patients are just noticing a huge improvement over their older technology,” Rollo-Jucho explained. “Many patients have worn hearing us for years with us, they’re sometimes on their second, third or fourth sets of hearing aids and many are reporting that these are the best sounding hearing that they’ve had to use.”
Audiologists are prescribing he newest models of Beltone AI hearing aids at 25 locations in Ohio, including Dr. Rollo-Juchno’s offices in North Olmsted and Beachwood.
