It is widely accepted that the private sector in Switzerland benefits enormously from foreign workers – but an investigation by the newspaper Blick points out that only 5% of the 43,000-strong workforce for the federal government are foreigners. A figure that has not changed for years.

Business leaders say the “golden cage” of stable jobs and rising wages makes the federal administration very attractive to Swiss citizens – and less so to foreign workers.

The government cites language requirements and roles reserved only for Swiss nationals as reasons for the low diversity, although it insists that all jobs are publicly advertised and open to all nationalities.

Integration Commissioner Natalie Pawlick says the government is not fully exploiting the potential of people with a migrant background./Albinfo.ch/
