Novak Djokovic (5th, Serbia) was thrilled to reach the top of the men’s professional tennis (ATP) tour for the 101st time.
Djokovic is part of the ATP Tour in Athens, Greece on the 8th (local time)On the final day of the Pharmaceutical Hellenic Championship, he defeated Lorenzo Musetti of Italy, 9th, 2-1 (4-66-37-5).
He added a win six months after the Geneva Championship in May, and received 116,690 euros (about 190 million won) as the prize money. Djokovic, who increased the number of singles wins in the Tour’s higher-level tournament to 101, also succeeded in narrowing the gap with Jimmy Connors (109 times, USA) and Roger Federer (103 times, Switzerland).
The Vanda Pharmaceutical Hellenic Championship, in which Djokovic’s younger brother served as tournament director, was originally scheduled to be held in Serbia under the name Belgrade Open. However, the venue was changed to Greece. Djokovic has recently been criticized by the Serbian government and pro-government media for his support for anti-government protests in Serbia, and rumors of a move to Greece have spread this fall. Djokovic will not attend the season’s final ATP Finals, which will open in Turin on the 9th, due to his shoulder injury. The ATP Finals is a competition with the characteristics of a ‘King of Kings’ that invites eight singles and eight doubles groups with the best performance in a season.
In this year’s ATP Finals singles, Jannik Sinner (1st, Italy), Carlos Alcaras (2nd, Spain), Alexander Zverev (3rd, Germany), Taylor Fritz (4th, USA), Ben Shelton (6th, USA), Alex Diminoer (7th, Australia), and Felix Ozealiasim (8th, Canada) will compete for the championship.
