DAYTON, Ohio (WKEF) — The 6th annual Miami Valley Meals ‘Turkey Takeaway’ is the day before Thanksgiving and this year it’s yet another lifeline for folks struggling through the government shutdown.
On November 26th at Trotwood-Madison High School from 9 to 11 am or at Fairborn Phoenix from 12 to 2 pm, families and individuals can take away a frozen turkey dinner to bake on Thanksgiving day.
“The goal is to make it a little easier on folks, especially during this time of uncertainty. To make sure that they have a nice meal that they can gather with their friends or family and get some nourishment, but also something really nice and just to connect and get a little bit of a break,” said Amanda DeLotelle, Executive Director of Miami Valley Meals
She said they’re preparing about 8000 meals and they’ve already increased their capacity by 10 to 15 percent to meet the demand the shutdown has caused. And they were surprised with a $10,000 matching donation this week that the community can contribute to.
“Every dollar you donate is matched up to $10,000. We’re really grateful for that donor to see that need and to step up in that way. If you are facing uncertain times, your community cares about you and there is help,” DeLotelle added.
She also praised the city of Dayton for showing up, not just for Miami Valley Meals, but for the other food banks and restaurants in the area going above and beyond for people.
“Lean on your support, lean on your neighbors, check on your neighbors, make sure your neighbors are doing okay. And just some simple kindness, some culinary kindness goes a long way,” DeLotelle said.
Again, the Turkey Takeaway is on Wednesday, November 26th, the day before Thanksgiving.
