The collaboration with Connecticut Foodshare continues ahead of Thanksgiving.
EAST HARTFORD, Conn. — Goodwin University’s turkey drive, in collaboration with Connecticut Foodshare, marked its 10th year Wednesday in tackling food insecurity.
The drive was held just outside of the Ann B. Clark Food Co-op at Goodwin University in East Hartford, where volunteers gathered turkeys and all the Thanksgiving trimmings ahead of the holiday.
Eric Emet, the Goodwin University athletic director and assistant dean of students, said they reached their target of 100 turkeys and $1,000 in cash donations early on during their one-day drive.
“You know it’s been pretty bleak for a lot of folks for the last few months, and we know [the turkey drive is] going to make a huge difference in paying it forward,” Emet said.
East Hartford-based BioSafe Systems supported the mission with a delivery of 30 frozen birds. Emet said the volunteers welcome as many as they can get.
“This never gets old,” he said, “It’s just phenomenal, it’s an unbelievable community effort and really a good group we work with but it’s a great group that we support.”
Chevon Reid, the event manager, added that the turkey drive came at an “awesome time to actually raise more money and food for people to provide more meals.”
