Role Purpose

The Environmental Science & Climate Change Intern will support GSG’s multidisciplinary teams in delivering high-quality environmental consulting assignments. This entry-level role provides hands-on exposure to fieldwork, research, data analysis, stakeholder engagement, and compliance processes. Designed for motivated early-career professionals, the internship helps interns build technical competence and develop a strong foundation in environmental consulting while contributing to GSG’s evolving blue-chip culture.

Key Responsibilities

1. Project Support and Administration

The intern will play an essential role in supporting daily project operations. This includes assisting with scheduling, logistics, and preparation for site activities. They will help track project deliverables, maintain basic project documentation, and ensure smooth coordination between technical teams and administrative units. Effective administrative support will be crucial in enabling timely project delivery and efficient workflow management.

2. Technical and Fieldwork Assistance

The position provides practical exposure to fieldwork and environmental monitoring. Under supervision, the intern will participate in baseline surveys and monitoring activities covering areas such as air quality, biodiversity, waste management, and environmental compliance. Responsibilities may include sampling, on-site observations, data capture, and contributing to field reports. This hands-on experience will help the intern build core technical skills relevant to environmental assessment and monitoring.

3. Research and Reporting

The intern will contribute to research efforts that underpin project design and decision-making. Tasks include conducting literature reviews, gathering baseline environmental information, and supporting the preparation of maps, tables, and charts for technical reports. This function requires strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate information accurately and professionally.

4. Stakeholder and Community Engagement Support

Environmental projects often require engagement with communities, regulators, and affected stakeholders. The intern will support the preparation of materials for public participation meetings and consultations. They may take notes, compile minutes, and assist senior staff in facilitating workshops or information-sharing sessions. This role will help the intern build an understanding of stakeholder dynamics and public engagement processes.

5. Business Development Support

The intern will also support business development processes. Activities may include assisting with staff CV updates, maintaining project databases, formatting proposal documents, and tracking tenders or funding opportunities. Exposure to proposal development will help the intern understand how environmental consulting firms position themselves competitively in the market.

6. Organisational Contribution

GSG values knowledge-sharing and organisational efficiency. The intern will support general office tasks, organizational systems, and shared knowledge platforms. Responsibilities may include version control for documents, filing project records, and contributing to internal learning processes. These activities reinforce professional discipline and effective project management.

7. Professional Conduct

The intern is expected to uphold GSG’s core values of integrity, professionalism, and excellence. This includes adhering to occupational health and safety requirements during field activities and demonstrating a commitment to ethical, responsible, and accountable conduct across all tasks.

Qualifications and Skills

Candidates must hold a minimum BSc degree in Environmental Science, Natural Sciences, or a related discipline. No prior work experience is required, making this role ideal for recent graduates. Applicants should have a basic understanding of South African environmental legislation, including NEMA, EIA Regulations, and NEM:WA. Strong computer literacy is required, especially in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, while GIS skills are considered an advantage. A strong academic record and excellent communication skills—written and verbal—are essential.

Competencies and Attributes

Ideal candidates will be teachable, adaptable, and eager to learn. They must demonstrate curiosity, reliability, professionalism, attention to detail, and the ability to function well within a team environment.
