New Russia Township will hold a public hearing Nov. 24 for a proposed zoning change of 585.2 acres, according to a notice issued by New Russia Township’s Zoning Board of Commission.

The hearing is on the proposed amendments to the New Russia Township’s resolution which was initiated by a property owner application.

The applicant seeks to change the parcels from general business and agriculture residential district to industrial park.

The hearing will take place at 6 p.m. at the Administrative Office of New Russia Township, 46300 Butternut Ridge Road.

The updates propose to amend the zoning map for eight parcels.

Those parcels are located at 10343 State Route 58 in Elyria, owned by Huron County Holdings LLC; an unnamed area of State Route 58 in Elyria, owned by Ceres Farms LLC; 45396 Russia Road in Elyria, also owned by Ceres Farms LLC; three unnamed areas on Oberlin Road in Elyria, also owned by Ceres Farms LLC; 9908 Oberlin Road in Elyria, also owned by Ceres Farms LLC; and 10011 State Route 58 in Elyria,  owned by Richard C. Pleasnick.

The land at issue surrounds the Lorain County Regional Airport, which was zoned last year as an industrial park.

Liberty Development Company is serving as the applicants’ representative regarding the requested zoning change, according to township documents written by Dru Siley, of the development group in Westlake.

Siley could not be reached for comment Nov. 17.

The eight parcels have frontage on Leavitt Road (State Route 58), Russia Road and Oberlin Road and “are adjacent to and abutting the Lorain County Regional Airport,” the documents state.

The application and map for the proposed amendment will be available for examination from 9 a.m.to 2 p.m. through Nov. 24 at the Administrative Office of New Russia Township.

The application also will be available at newrussiatownship-oh.gov.

After the hearing, the matter will be submitted to township trustees for further action.

Residents speak against proposed mega site at Lorain County Commission meeting

A significant number of people are opposed to the area being used as a proposed mega-site, Advanced Technology Center.

A petition started at Change.org has collected 3,680 signatures in opposition of the land being developed.

Some residents also have erected signage in their yards stating, “No Mega Site in New Russia Township.”

The Lorain County Commission Board received a $67.4 million state grant in July toward the construction infrastructure for the proposed industrial “mega-site” near the Lorain County Regional Airport.

The project has been in the works for a few years, county officials have said.
