A major internet outage has brought down some of the world’s most popular websites and apps, including X (formerly Twitter), ChatGPT, and Spotify, after internet infrastructure giant Cloudflare suffered a significant service failure.
The company confirmed it was investigating an “internal service degradation” that began on Tuesday warning users they might face “higher-than-normal error rates” during remediation efforts.
The incident had a ripple effect, crippling platforms that rely on Cloudflare’s content delivery and cybersecurity services. Even Down Detector, the popular outage-tracking website, was temporarily knocked offline by the same issues.
In a twist of fate that will not have gone unnoticed by Maltese readers, several major local news portals – including Times of Malta, Lovin Malta, Malta Today, and The Malta Independent – were also caught in the digital blackout, their websites succumbing to the global technical meltdown.
As of the latest update, Cloudflare has stated that services are beginning a gradual recovery, though full stability has not yet been restored. The cause of the widespread outage remains under investigation.
