The 25th annual Free the Z Turkey Drive brought together volunteers, donors, and local businesses in Brewer to help provide Thanksgiving meals for families in need.

BREWER, Maine — Outside the Hannaford in Brewer, turkeys were dropped off one after another Tuesday morning as volunteers worked to make this year’s Thanksgiving a little brighter for families across the region.

“It’s just really cool to be out here and know that we’re doing our part and actively trying to help get families food on the table,” volunteer Justin McGregor said.

McGregor is one of dozens assisting with this year’s Free the Z Turkey Drive, organized by radio station Z107.3 in partnership with Penquis. All donated turkeys are delivered to food pantries throughout the region. It’s support that Penquis says is badly needed this holiday season.

“With heating costs and the holidays coming, it puts a lot of stress on families,” said Renae Muscatell, community relations manager for Penquis. “Having help during the holidays really eases the burden for a lot of people.”

Volunteers moved quickly, stacking donations into carts and getting them ready for distribution. For some, the effort is deeply personal.

“It feels amazing to be out here helping the community as much as I can,” said Troy Hood, who once received a turkey from the drive himself.

“Last year I got one, and it meant so much. It helped me and my family so much,” he added.

Organizers say their goal is to collect at least 2,025 turkeys—a symbolic target meant to match the year.

“It just feels like the need is bigger this year,” according to “The Kid,” who hosts the Z Morning Show. “Every year it’s a little bit different. A lot of businesses, school kids get involved. It’s become a big thing. It’s just grown every year that we’ve done it.”

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the turkey drive, and local businesses are stepping up as well. Versant Power donated $2,500 toward the effort.

“We wanted to make sure Versant Power heats your homes and keeps you warm during the winter, but we also wanted to fill your bellies,” said Emily Tadlock, communications specialist with Versant Power.

Organizers say every donation—no matter the size—helps bring another family closer to a Thanksgiving meal they otherwise might not have
