INDIANA COUNTY, PA (WJAC) — The Homer City redevelopment project is moving forward following the state Department of Environmental Protection’s approval of an air permit for the Homer City Energy Campus.

This permit allows for the installation of seven combined-cycle combustion gas turbines and 10 simple cycle aero-derivative gas turbines.

Homer City Generation anticipates the first turbines will arrive next year.

Kiewit, the power construction corporation involved in the project, will soon begin mobilizing construction crews at the site of the former Homer City coal-powered plant.

The new energy campus is expected to commence power production in 2027.

The Homer City Generating Plant, once the largest coal-burning power plant in Pennsylvania, ceased operations in 2023.

It is now set to become the largest natural gas-powered plant in the country, transforming into a more than 3,200-acre natural gas-powered data center campus to support growing AI and high-performance computing needs.
