Spanish renewables firm Ibereólica and Spanish energy company Repsol plan to hybridize their jointly owned operational 165MW Atacama wind farm, documents submitted to environmental review agency SEA indicate.
The plant, located in the northern Atacama region, is experiencing curtailment.
Through a letter of pertinence request and via unit Parque Eólico Atacama, the companies are proposing the installation of a 170MW battery energy storage system with four hours of injection capacity. Installation would be carried out in two phases.
The letter of pertinence route allows companies to ask SEA whether a project must undergo the full environmental evaluation process.
Capex is not disclosed but, based on price tags of similar projects, may be around US$120mn.
The Atacama wind farm entered service in 2023.
Chile’s energy storage capacity is expanding rapidly. Installed capacity is expected to reach 2GW in 2026. By 2030, total capacity could hit 10GW.
A recent study found that long-duration energy storage systems – capable of injecting power for multiple hours, days or even weeks – would represent a “viable and strategic” asset for the national grid.
