Prime Minister Robert Abela dismissed suggestions that the next general election will boil down to a popularity contest between himself and Opposition Leader Alex Borg.
“It’s not just about me, it’s about the two teams,” Abela said in an interview with Times of Malta.
“I don’t manage public finances, tourism, economic issues and national security by myself after all. It’s all about the respective teams and that’s the choice people have. People will have two teams to choose from, and they must compare the calibre of each.”
The Prime Minister also played down suggestions that he plans to call a snap election in the coming months, despite having hinted at the possibility last June ahead of the PN leadership election.
“The rumour mill used to claim that I would call an election in March 2025, now it’s saying I will call one in March 2026,” he said.
“We have a five-year mandate, and I will call an election when the national interest requires it. At the moment, there is no need. Christmas is approaching, and we want people to enjoy it with their families while we continue shouldering our national responsibilities.”
“I cannot predict the circumstances a year from now, but my intention is to complete the mandate the people entrusted to us.”
If Labour completes its full term, the next general election will take place in March 2027.
