I have been babbling about this method of boglands as a defence for ages. If you have ever tried to walk on the wetlands, then they are sneaky mofos, seems fine, then suddenly you are knee deep in some ancient, primordial mud.
In winter the wetlands do not really properly freeze and you can easily fall through, basically crossing them is possible, but you have to be very familiar with the specific location otherwise you will get stuck and/or die.
I really like walking around the wetlands in really cold weather and I have fallen through hundreds of times with no gear on me at all and it takes so much energy to cross even one kilometer or five.
