EAST TAWAS – Friends of Tawas Point Lighthouse and State Park will hold “Christmas at the Lighthouse” on Saturday, Nov. 29, from noon to 4 p.m.
Those attending the event can climb the lighthouse tower for unique views out windows along the spiral stairway, and then step into the Lantern Room at the top, refurbished to the year 1895, for a close look at the original historical and magnificent Fourth Order Fresnel lens, plus a rarely seen Fall/Winter view of Lake Huron, Tawas Bay, the Tawases, and the ever changing Tawas Point sandy hook.
Visitors can also browse through the seasonally decorated lighthouse rooms of the Summer kitchen, dining area, oil room, living room and bedroom. Also on this day only, attendees can visit the second floor living quarters usually occupied by the volunteer keepers from mid-May through mid-October. This area was the original four bedroom upstairs which was converted to a modern apartment to become the “home away from home” for volunteers who come for a two-week stay May to October.
The event is free, however, vehicles are required to have a valid Recreation Passport to enter all the state park.
