Recently discovered that TRNC operators started roaming services for RoC, which begs the question: how is this allowed?

Some context,

Turkey-based operators do not have a Cyprus roaming plan, which makes sense given the negligible volume of Turkish citizens traveling to RoC.

However, ironically, TRNC-based operators began providing roaming services a few months ago, probably due to the volume of traffic through the checkpoints.

The legal issue here is that, even though the facilitation of these services may involve 3rd-party involvement, this still means that Cyprus GSM providers’ RoC bank accounts are receiving funds originating from TRNC entities.

PS. I am also planning to make another post about how TRNC banks can operate and why their cards are accepted at RoC POS machines.

  1. Vodafone likely manages this over some european branch (Greece?) and Turkish branch.

Also Turkey doesn’t recognize RoC, but TRNC has a separate legislation and can be more flexible (i.e. can technically recognize) RoC separately from Turkey.

vice versa is a thing too. It’s to help people who get stranded in the middle of nowhere without internet and tough to find help.

I bet this became a thing when an official needed internet on the opposite side for them lol, mostly how things work in cyprus xD

  3. So, on the flip side, you think a GC who crosses to the north often should buy and maintain 2 sim cards? Because? Political game?

I’ve always found it stupid that they didn’t make sim cards work on both sides. And I believe there shouldn’t even be roaming… I mean, roaming for what?

Let me tell you something. What you are doing, trying to ban TCs from basic human needs under the name of “TRNC,” is causing more harm than good. What do you think? A TC, obviously born and living in the north, shouldn’t have an internationally working bank account, or not even a sim card working internationally, not even in Cyprus? Are you ok? That naturally causes TCs to fck off to “literally” get a life…

*Those are Turkish credit cards*, all of them are registered in Turkey but issiued in TRNC that’s why it’s working in Southern Cyprus.

In short, OP’s comments have gone off-topic and are full of unnecessary repetition. To summarize: KKTC operators now provide roaming in the Republic of Cyprus; this is technically possible and legally a grey area. The banking side is connected to Turkey and operates within the EU framework. It’s 2025, and you’re politicizing every little thing instead of focusing on unity. Turks crossing south are already local Cypriots what exactly are you complaining about? Don’t they have equal rights in the Republic of Cyprus? What’s the problem, do you also not want local Turkish Cypriots? As for the cards, whether it’s Visa or Mastercard doesn’t matter; the transactions work. There’s no need to dramatize it’s straightforward and clear.
