The White House and Minsk are working on the possible release in the near future of over a hundred political prisoners of the Belarusian regime.

This was reported by Reuters.

According to sources, despite the fact that Belarus has already released several dozen people earlier, the US wants to achieve another wave of release within the framework of a single agreement.

It is currently unknown which political prisoners may be released. Western human rights organizations claim that the Belarusian government is holding more than 1,000 prisoners.

As Reuters notes, the US push for the largest prisoner release to date is part of a “controversial campaign” to improve relations with the authoritarian state in exchange for the prospect of sanctions relief.

Some U.S. officials said the Trump administration’s efforts are part of a broader U.S. strategy to remove Minsk from Moscow’s geopolitical orbit, at least slightly. Reorienting Belarus toward the West would be a strategic victory.

“The United States stands ready to engage with Belarus in furtherance of U.S. interests and will continue efforts to secure the release of political prisoners in Belarus,” a State Department spokesman said.

Recall, it was previously reported that Alexander Lukashenko pardoned 31 Ukrainian citizens imprisoned in Belarus.

By the way, on June 21,a number of political prisoners were released in Belarus , including opposition figure Serhiy Tikhanovsky.
