It is a great honour to join you today for the farewell of His Excellency the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Cyprus, Mr LIU Yantao.
Throughout its history, China has undergone remarkable transformation. Its exceptional economic growth, significant advancements in science, and its leadership in technology and manufacturing have resulted in tremendous progress and prosperity to the Chinese people.
Today, the People’s Republic of China stands as a major global power, playing an influential role in international governance and world affairs. Its active engagement in international institutions and multilateral organisations, along with its contributions to sustainable development, underscore its growing global presence.
Although much remains to be achieved to secure lasting peace globally, I am encouraged that both the People’s Republic of China and the Republic of Cyprus endorse and uphold the core principles of the United Nations (UN) Charter and international law.
Allow me also to express our profound appreciation for China’s support for the sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity of the Republic of Cyprus. We especially value China’s stance on the Cyprus issue, including its role as a Permanent Member of the UN Security Council, in support of our efforts to resume negotiations for a viable and lasting settlement, based on the agreed UN framework.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
At first glance, the geographical distance between Cyprus and China might seem prohibitive. However, our bilateral relations have been growing rapidly. Trade and investment are expanding, creating new opportunities for businesses and jobs. It is my firm conviction that in the years to come, the Republic of Cyprus and the People’s Republic of China will further consolidate their cooperation, elevating our partnership to ever greater heights.
Your Excellency, during your service in Cyprus, you have worked tirelessly to further strengthen the relationship between our two countries. These efforts have laid strong foundations for the future.
From the perspective of the Ministry of Finance, we particularly value the constructive dialogue we have maintained. Your openness and commitment to mutual understanding have supported a climate of trust that is essential for effective cooperation.
Beyond the formal achievements, we also acknowledge your personal engagement with Cyprus, your respect for our people, your appreciation for our culture.
As you complete your mission, allow me to extend our sincere thanks and warmest wishes. Cyprus will always welcome you as a friend.
