After an impressive showing at the recent EuroBasket, Turkey enters World Cup Qualifiers full of confidence. At that tournament, Turkey reached the final, where it fell to Germany 88–83, but not before defeating several championship contenders, including Serbia, Greece, and host nation Latvia. Ergin Ataman, the charismatic Turkish head coach, has already set the tone in his trademark style, stating clearly that the goal is to win a gold medal at one of the upcoming major competitions.
To make that happen, Turkey must first qualify for the World Cup. The good news for Panathinaikos coach Ataman is that the national federation has buried the hatchet with Fenerbahce, the reigning EuroLeague champion and the strongest club in Turkey. Due to past disagreements with Ataman, Fenerbahce had refused to release its players for national-team duty. That issue now seems resolved, allowing Onuralp Bitim and Tarık Biberovic to return to the squad. In addition to them, Ataman can count on several quality players such as Sertac Sanli, Ercan Osmani, Berke Ugurlu, Yigit Arslan, and Kenan Sipahi, all of whom have been performing at a solid level. The roster also includes Furkan Korkmaz, who has yet to regain the form that once earned him a place in the NBA. On the wider list were high-level players like Cedi Osman and Omer Yurtseven, but injuries will keep them out. Qualifiers are often difficult for teams with many EuroLeague and NBA players, but Turkey has a positive atmosphere and a respectable level of talent – and they’re facing an opponent dealing with its own issues.
Bosnia and Herzegovina has managed to solve at least one of those issues by appointing a new head coach. Adis Beciragic unexpectedly resigned after leading the team to a strong performance at the EuroBasket. Still, long-standing problems and disagreements inside the Basketball Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina were well known even before the team traveled to the tournament, so Adis Beciragic’s departure isn’t entirely surprising.
His replacement is Croatian coach Dario Gjergja. Gjergja built an impressive résumé in Belgium, winning 14 national titles with Oostende before taking over French club Limoges this summer. He also coached the Belgian national team starting in 2018, leading them to several notable victories – including one against Serbia in World Cup qualifying. However, upon arriving in Bosnia, he was met with immediate challenges and a string of withdrawals. The federation criticized Dubai-based clubs for refusing to release Kenan Kamenjas, Kosta Kondic, and Dzanan Musa. Aleksandar Lazic, Amar Gegic and Edin Atic also pulled out. For well-known reasons, Bosnia and Herzegovina cannot count on its NBA players, Jusuf Nurkic and Luka Garza; Jusuf Nurkic has publicly voiced strong criticism of the federation, raising questions about whether he will represent the national team anytime soon. From the available roster, the most prominent names include Amar Alibegovic – who has even been linked with Barcelona – along with Emir Sulejmanovic and Xavier Castaneda from Unicaja, and former Partizan player Adin Vrabac.
