Deputy Foreign Minister Nikolay Pavlov received copies of the letters of credence from Japan’s newly appointed Ambassador to Bulgaria, Chikahisa Sumi, on Friday, the ministry’s press centre announced.

At the meeting, both sides expressed their strong appreciation for the continued positive development of bilateral relations, marked by the establishment of a strategic partnership in May 2025, a series of high-level visits, and Bulgaria’s participation in Expo 2025 in Osaka.

Deputy Minister Pavlov emphasized the importance of sustaining this positive momentum by expanding cooperation in areas of mutual interest. He noted that while Bulgaria is well known in Japan as the land of yogurt and roses, the country is also eager to promote its modern image as a hub for high technology, innovation, and artificial intelligence, key themes highlighted in Bulgaria’s presentation at Expo 2025.

The conversation also underscored the importance of strengthening exchanges in traditional fields such as culture, science and education, tourism, and people-to-people contacts, the statement said.
