Adventist Fellowship in Tulsa kicked off its first-ever Turkey Trot. Participants were encouraged to bring non-perishable food items, turning the race into an effort to fight hunger.
Amy Hollowy, the church’s Health Ministry Leader, said the need in the community is greater than ever.
“People are struggling right now. They are struggling to eat and get meals,” Hollowy said. “What’s better than helping out with some non-perishables and feeding the community?”
Among the crowd were two runners who donned festive turkey outfits.
“We did a little test run last night,” Noah Zigo said of his preparation in the costume. “It was more of a trot. It wasn’t really a run.”
Runner Nathan Povendo said giving back was the main reason he showed up.
“Just coming here and supporting. Getting food out to those that need it…that’s pretty important to us,” he said.
Organizers say the Turkey Trot is something they hope becomes a yearly tradition.
“We’re going to do this every year so we can help feed the community,” one organizer said.
All the food collected during the event will be donated to the Tulsa Community Service Center.
