It's good news to see fossil fuel cars in such steep decline. This contrasts with the US, where gas cars are still near 90% of new sales. It's China and Europe who are embracing EVs the fastest, though in China, combustion engine cars are still near 50% of sales.

But it's not all good news. Half of those EVs are hybrid models. Data shows drivers with these still use a significant amount of gas, almost as much as ICE cars. The EU has set a 2035 deadline to ban all new gas car sales, and it seems that will include these polluting hybrid cars, too.

ARTICLE – Electric car sales overtake gasoline and diesel in Europe

Europeans are switching to EVs faster than anywhere else in the world. Only 36% of new car sales are gasoline or diesel cars so far in Europe in 2025.

  1. And how does eu make said electricity? What is the lifespan of an ev vehicle as oposed to ICE one? Average age of a car in Croatia is 13 years

  2. But chinese propaganda is telling me we can’t do this and have to wait to wait for the chinese EVs.

  3. Transition will be faster than expected. Once a critical mass is achieved, it accelerates. It reminds me to the smartphone adoption curve.

  4. It is great news, and Europe is perfect for it because our countries are a lot smaller. We need to break the larger car issue though.

  5. “The standard hybrid-electric vehicle remains the most popular choice for EU consumers.”
Hybrid not fully electric, you can’t even buy regular gasoline powered cars, maybe that’s why

  6. We have hit the threshold/critical mass where lobby groups can’t fight back and delay anymore – and at this point manufacturers have to invest and produce EV-s instead to stay afloat.

Just please keep the door handles mechanical.. that’s all I ask. I ain’t buying shit where the only way to get out is fly by wire. Not safe.

  8. Wait – so I have a fairly large hybrid – Avalon. It gets 44 MPG. Around here there are 100’s of Prius – 51 to 55 MPG. I think US Fleet MPG is about 25.

Are you suggesting that’s using almost as much gas?

Here’s a stat for you. US Gas use has went down 5%.

1% is due to BEV. 1%. The rest is due to better MPG, including Hybrids.

So, quick quiz, which is bigger – 1% or 4%?
Second quiz – if Hybrids were mandated in 2016, do you think gasoline use would ONLY be down 1%? or 5%? – definitely not, IMHO. It would be down 15-20% or more – imagine, 20X as much savings as has been acheived. Not even close.

So based on math – BEV’s are bad news….if I use your logic….and that does not even include the 60% fossil fuels needed to fuel them!

One really has to think a bit outside the box. Fact is, BEVs in the USA are a complete failure if we measure it by reduced Gasoline (and fossil fuel) use. Less than 1%. Surely you don’t think that is getting us anywhere – especially considering what we have spent in taxing everyone to pay for that 1% (tax credits, carbon credits, etc.).

  9. Great for the eu, so many things holding in back in the US right now though.

We have one ev charging area in the whole city (of well over 80k people) so that already makes it hard

If I wanted to charge properly at home it would cost a fortune as I do not have the proper breaker setup

Ice cars are still cheaper to buy, and well, our economy isn’t doing any good right now

I’m guessing I’m going to need one more ice vehicle before I get a ev, and hopefully they have some nice looking suv style ones by then cause cars struggle with my driveway

  10. Would be nice if car companies made EVs with physical buttons for adjusting the air conditioning and stuff instead of a touch screen that will break or slow down in a year or two.

Most of these are mild-hybrids which are basically ICE cars. They cannot drive on electric alone. All they do is slightly improve fuel consumption.

  12. Electric vehicles are a disgrace. The amount of actual pollution caused by batteries and mining far outweighs the so called “savings”, its a scam, another bubble created through brainwashing the uneducated mass.

I’ve actually been looking into the UKs adoption of EV cars as part of my university project. A promising future if we can upscale the infrastructure in the country.

The European Union is composed of FAR smaller areas than the US. (. Also why rail is more prevalent there). Solve for charging over an hour and range under 500 miles and you may have something the USA will actually buy in numbers

I don’t agree with hybrid hate. Near me a dealership didn’t sell a single hybrid that wasn’t PHEV. And even if those hybrids are used like normal ICE cars, most of the time they are on electric only in city traffic. Which helps with a smog for example. I’m all in for proper battery only EVs, but considering what was said 5 years ago the progress is significant.

  16. It helps that most of Europe has the infrastructure required to not need a car for longer distance travel. No need to drive more than 300km in most cases.

  17. Yeah when the car manufacturers cant offer a descent gasoline/diesel option for a reasonable price, people are either buying electric, or resorting on used models, sometimes imports from USA.

  18. Here s the math: USA fleet size…280 million registered vehicles. New vehicle sales last year…15.8 million. Even if every vehicle sold in the US was 100% EV starting Jan 1st and 1 ice vehicle was taken off the road for every sale, it will take 17.7 years to replace the entire fleet. This process and conversion will take longer than most are projecting.

Most of the cars are hybrids, not 100% electric. It’s misleading to say that “electric cars overtake gasoline and diesel in Europe”.
